Teatro Petruzzelli is the largest theatre in Bari and the fourth largest in Italy.

Designed by engineer Angelo Cicciomessere and frescoed by Raffaele Armenise, it was inaugurated on February 14, 1903, with Meyerbeer’s ‘Les Huguenots’.

The theatre was equipped with heating and electricity, accommodating 2,192 seats.

On October 27, 1991, it was devastated by a fire caused by arson.

After extensive reconstruction, it reopened on October 4, 2009, with a concert featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

The theatre now has a capacity of approximately 1,500 seats and hosts a variety of performances, including operas, ballets, and concerts.
